UDOT contracted with CRS to evaluate connecting Class 1 railroad companies north of I-80 in western Salt Lake County. Rail design included two alignment alternatives, totaling a length of six miles. The railroad additions / modifications included a Class 1 mainline, which serves freight (UPRR & BNSF), and transit (Amtrak), industrial lead, shortline railroad tie-in, and yard relocations. CRS assessed alternatives for utilizing an existing grade-separated crossing compared to constructing a new grade-separated crossing. Preliminary designs for railroad, roadway, and bridge improvements were prepared and a Concept Report was submitted to UDOT. The report included an analysis of costs and impacts to traffic, right-of-way, wetlands, environmental resources, drainage, roadway, and structures.
